One of the most beautiful moments of the seventh season of The Clone Wars so far is a brand new interaction between Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala in the second episode, “A Distant Echo.”
Before heading off on their mission to Skako Minor, Anakin indicates to Rex that he must take care of something. Rex, however, is hesitant, saying they don’t have time for it – but Skywalker insists. So Rex gives Anakin his helmet and stands watch outside the barracks as Anakin goes inside and contacts Padmé. Anakin apologizes to his wife that the Outer Rim Sieges are taking so long, but she is very understanding. They discuss the situation with Rex, and Padmé encourages Anakin to trust Rex – just like Rex has trusted him so often.
Meanwhile, Obi-Wan Kenobi arrives and Rex attempts to dissuade him from entering the barracks. Kenobi knows that Skywalker is inside, but Rex tries to insist that Anakin is spot-checking his armor. Anakin emerges and gives Rex back his helmet, and he declines to speak to Kenobi about the mission, blowing off a couple attempts from his master. As Anakin walks away with Rex, Obi-Wan calls out after him, “I hope you at least told Padmé I said hello.” This causes Anakin to pause, initially looking upset before turning slightly and acknowledging his master.
This confirms that Rex knew about Anakin’s relationship, as Anakin actually enlisted the help of his Captain in contacting Padmé secretly. So between Rex, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, and Palpatine, those closest to Anakin all knew about his relationship with Padmé.
Of course, we always knew that by the time of Revenge of the Sith Obi-Wan knows about Anakin’s secret relationship with Padmé, but it has been hinted and implied various other times in The Clone Wars that he knows as well. This, however, is the strongest and most obvious hint that Obi-Wan knows, as he knows exactly what Anakin was up to and trying to hide. Obi-Wan makes it clear to Anakin that he knows about it, yet Obi-Wan doesn’t tell the Jedi Council and remains ever-loyal to his friend. And so that’s what I think is heartbreaking about it: despite all of this, Anakin didn’t trust Obi-Wan enough to be open about it. It’s his best friend, someone he considers to be the closest thing he ever had to a father, and Anakin knows that Obi-Wan knows about it… yet Anakin still didn’t feel like he could open up. I wonder how much could have changed were Anakin just willing to let Obi-Wan in on that secret, as in turn maybe Anakin would have turned to Kenobi for help in ROTS rather than Palpatine?
We can’t know all of those “what ifs,” but what we do know for certain is that Obi-Wan, Rex, and Ahsoka all knew about Anakin’s relationship with Padmé – yet all of them remained loyal and supportive.
