New Star Wars novel to explore Poe Dameron’s backstory before the sequel trilogy!

Polygon today revealed that a brand new Star Wars novel is coming later this year about Poe Dameron, entitled Star Wars: Poe Dameron: Free Fall!

The book will be written by Star Wars newcomer Alex Segura and is set to be released on August 4, 2020. Here’s the official description for the novel that was released:

It’s been a few years since Poe’s mother, who was a pilot for the Rebellion, passed away, and Poe and his father have had more and more trouble connecting. Not sure what he wants to do with his life, teenage Poe runs away from home to find adventure, and to figure out what kind of man he is meant to be.

If you want a bit of clarity on that timeline (which was made a bit confusing in The Rise of Skywalker), I wrote about the sequel trilogy timeline (and the leadup to it) here. As it pertains to Poe, we know that his mother, Shara Bey, died when he was just eight years old. Eight years after that tragic event, when Poe was 16 years old, he ran away from home to join the Spice Runners. He was with the Spice Runners for five years before heading back home (at the age of 21), and then four years after that he joined the New Republic (when he was 25). After three years of training he began flying with the New Republic (when he was 28), and then a year after that he joined the Resistance (at the age of 29). He had been with the Resistance for three years when he fired the shots that destroyed Starkiller Base (when he was 32).

This book will take place during Poe’s teenage years, showing his hard relationship with his father, Kes, in the wake of Shara Bey’s death, and him deciding to run away from home. This leads to him joining the Spice Runners, and in Polygon’s interview with Segura it was revealed that Zorri Bliss will be a part of this story too, as one would expect. I’m really excited to learn more about their history, and to get some details filled in about Poe’s backstory. I am really, really hoping that now that the sequel trilogy has concluded we will begin getting a lot more information about the period of time in-between the original trilogy and the sequel trilogy.

And I’m also really hoping that Babu Frik is a part of this story too, as we can’t have enough of him.
