Kathy Kennedy confirms that Lucasfilm is working on developing Old Republic content

One thing that many Star Wars fans have come to love is the Old Republic era, thanks to the classic Knights of the Old Republic games.  Many fans grew up playing those games, and so they obviously and understandably have a soft spot for that era.

And with the Skywalker saga coming to a close this year and Lucasfilm looking toward what comes next, fans are hoping that the Old Republic will be a part of that.

In a recent interview with MTV News, Lucasfilm President Kathy Kennedy was asked about whether they’re developing anything like that currently, and here’s what she said:

“You know, we talk about that all the time.  Yes.  We are developing something to look at.  Right now, I have no idea where things might fall, but we have to be careful that there is a cadence to Star Wars that doesn’t start to feel like too much.  We don’t have a crystal ball to see, you know, we tried a little bit with Solo to see if we could do two movies a year, and whether or not there was really an opportunity for that, and we felt that’s not going to work, so we backed off of that a little bit.  But it doesn’t mean we don’t think about lots of different stories, because that ‘s the exciting thing about this universe.”

So Kennedy did confirm that they talk about that all the time and are working on developing something currently, but she then softened that a bit by explaining that they have to think about how these things are released.  It doesn’t sound like they’re going to be releasing multiple films a year, but they are looking into developing something for the Old Republic era.

As I’ve long said, I’d be shocked if, between the trilogy coming from Benioff and Weiss, and the trilogy coming from Rian Johnson, they didn’t delve heavily into that era.  It makes too much sense and there’s very rich storytelling potential, and in the current canon the Old Republic has been quite conspicuously (and I think intentionally) left mostly untouched.

So again, nothing seems to be concrete right now and I think Kennedy didn’t want to create unrealistic expectations about when this stuff might be coming, but she did confirm that it’s in development.  And though that’s not surprising, it is pretty awesome.
