What we learned about three new characters from The Mandalorian at Star Wars Celebration

At the panel at Star Wars Celebration for The Mandalorian, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni introduced the audience to three of the cast members of the show: Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, and Greef Carga.  The actors then gave us a bit of information about who their characters are.  Here’s what we learned about these three new characters.

The Mandalorian

Mando1

The main character of the show, the Mandalorian, is played by Pedro Pascal, who had this to say about his character:

“The Mandalorian is a mysterious, lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy.  I would say his, some might say he has questionable moral character.  Which is in line with some of our best Westerns, some good Samurai, all the best, all the good stuff.  And he’s a badass.”

We don’t know much at all about his character, and it seems that they want to keep this mystery going as long as they can.  The character seems to just be referred to as “the Mandalorian” and is described as the best bounty hunter in the parsec in the secret footage screened at Celebration.  The main premise of the show is that this character, the Mandalorian, goes after a target on a high-paying, underworld job, pursuing a mysterious character who is 50 years old.

Cara Dune

Mando2

Another one of the new characters is Cara Dune, played by Gina Carano, and it was at this panel that we got our first look at her character (including her name).  Here’s how Carano describes her character:

“So my character’s name is Cara Dune, and she’s an ex-Rebel shock trooper … and basically, since it’s such a secret thing, I’ve never been a part of something so secret, I can’t tell you that much, but I’m a bit of a loner, which isn’t a far stretch, and I’m learning how to, have a bit of trouble reintegrating myself into society.”

I think it’s pretty exciting that she was formerly a Rebel shock trooper, and I’m hoping that this show will give us a look at how the galaxy is dealing with the rise of the New Republic, as former Imperials and former Rebels are trying to adjust to this new way of living.  But she’ll have a ton of action sequences in this show, much of which Carano did herself, and in that secret footage there was a glimpse of her fighting the Mandalorian briefly, presumably upon their first meeting.

Greef Carga

Mando3

Carl Weathers plays Greef Carga, who is the head of a bounty hunter guild.  Here’s the way Weathers explained his character:

“The character is Greef [Carga], and he is a guy who is running this group of bounty hunters.  He’s kind of the head of this guild of bounty hunters, and he’s a guy who, there seems to be a lot of kind of nefarious people, even if they’re good people they are kind of nefarious sides to them, right?  So he’s looking for someone to go after a product that he wants to bring a client that’s worth a lot and that’s very valuable, and guess who he finds?  He finds a bounty hunter named Mandalorian, and the Mando is a guy that he figures can get the job done, so he hires this guy, sends him out there, and the Mando does what needs to be done.”

In that secret footage shown, there’s a clip of Greef meeting with the Mandalorian to discuss jobs.  The Mandalorian wants all of them, but Greef insists that he has to leave some for the rest in the guild.  The Mandalorian isn’t satisfied with these – saying they won’t even pay for the price of fuel nowadays – which is when Greef brings up this other, mysterious, high-paying job.

So there’s a bit more information about three of the new characters in the show!  Everything we’ve heard and seen about this show so far sounds absolutely awesome, and I can’t wait for it to premiere in November.
