The Last Jedi officially releases in U.S. theaters exactly one month from today, and for those seeing it on opening night (like me), we’re less than a month away!
We’ve already seen a lot of marketing for the highly-anticipated blockbuster, and we’re sure to see even more in the coming weeks. Recently, there have been a lot of TV spots, and while most of the footage is recycled from previous trailers and the like, there have been some interesting new shots, new lines, and new clues.
Thanks to those who have found the spots and posted them on Youtube, and we’ll take a look at some of the significant new shots and what (if anything) it hints at for TLJ. Though it’s all released footage, if you don’t want to know anything about the movie, it’s best not to continue any further.
Leia – and a holographic Supremacy
One of the new TV spots has a new shot of Leia in the command center of a Resistance ship turning around to look at something. You can see Kaydel Connix in the background on the other side of the display, but aside from seeing Leia in a new shot the significance of this one is what’s on display: you’ll notice several Star Destroyers on the bottom half of the display and then a massive ship on the top half, which is Supreme Leader Snoke’s flagship, the Supremacy. This new shot really gives you a sense for the size of that thing, as you see it compared to normal Destroyers. I’d guess this is from the Evacuation of D’Qar early in the movie, especially since the second official trailer seemingly indicated the flagship’s role in the battle.
Poe and Leia
Another shot of Leia also appeared in a recent spot, in a conversation with Poe – and it’s the first we’ve heard the General talk so far in the promos for the movie. Poe says (seemingly desperately), “Permission to jump in an X-Wing and blow something up?” to which Leia responds, “Permission granted.”
It’s nice to see the General speaking, as well as seeing her interact with Poe, as it sounds like the two will share a considerable amount of screentime together in the movie. This could also perhaps be during the Evacuation of D’Qar, in which case the Resistance would certainly need their ace pilot in the air blowing things up.
Poe’s Piloting Skills
Speaking of Poe, we got a new shot of him flying his X-Wing and pulling a pretty awesome move, as he flies through an explosion (probably caused by him) and pulling the controls of his X-Wing to spin it around. It’s a cool scene, and it too likely happens above D’Qar (look at the planet in the background).
We really haven’t seen much of Rose at all in the footage of The Last Jedi so far, but a recent promo spot showed us a shot of her that seems significant. It’s cool to get a shot of the new character regardless, but she’s flying a Ski Speeder on Crait! So that means so far we have Poe, Finn, and Rose confirmed as flying speeders to defend the Resistance on Crait, and we also know that the Millennium Falcon flies during the battle at some point too.
What this also means is that Rose probably doesn’t die when she goes undercover with Finn. Assuming that Crait is indeed in the third act of the film, it means that Rose is confirmed there. Some had speculated that Rose wouldn’t survive the undercover mission, which perhaps was the motivation for Finn’s fight with Phasma (as if him being a traitor and all that wasn’t enough). This confirms otherwise.
We’ve also got a few new shots of Rey’s training on Ahch-To, including the above one of her twirling her lightsaber with a grin on her face. But there was also a shot of her with her staff glancing at the lightsaber in her bag:
So here’s probably what happens: Rey is training with her staff (we’ve seen shots of that so far), but with Luke refusing to train her she takes note of the lightsaber and decides to train with it instead (and we’ve seen several shots of her training with the saber).
New Finn quotes
We’ve also got a couple new shots and quotes from Finn. In the above one, Finn says, “May the Force be with you.” This looks to me to be from early in the movie, perhaps before he goes off on his mission with Rose to Canto Bight and then undercover to infiltrate the First Order.
Then in a different shot, we see a close-up shot of Finn saying, “I was raised to fight. For the first time I had something to fight for.” This is definitely the more interesting of the two quotes; we knew that Finn was raised to fight, as he said as much in The Force Awakens. But he now says that he had something to fight for ,and it sounds to be in the past tense. Is he referring to Rey, thinking she’s gone? Whatever he means, at least he’s found something worth fighting for.
The Falcon – with no dish
In one of the TV spots we see a new shot of the Millennium Falcon – but with one noticable difference. In one of the more recent teasers for the movie we saw the Falcon flying in the crystal caves of Crait as it’s being pursued by TIE Fighters, and one of the blasts from a TIE appeared to knock the satellite dish off the Falcon. So now look at the above shot of the Falcon flying over what again appears to be Crait: there’s no dish. That seems to be confirmation that the satellite dish will need to be replaced once again, and it also helps us place the above shot: this is after the iconic ship’s flight through the caves.
