Ten things we learned from the second Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer

Last night, Lucasfilm dropped the second trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and it was very impressive.  There’s a lot to talk about, and earlier we went through the entire trailer breaking it down.  Now, let’s take a step back and look at the biggest things we learned or had confirmed in the trailer.

We’re using the word “learned” lightly, as we’ll mention a few new things that were revealed, a few things that were suspected but now confirmed, and a few informed speculations that would be new revelations if true.  Regardless, it’s a helpful way to look at some of the key insights provided in the trailer.

Obviously, if you don’t want any spoilers about the movie, it’s probably best to not read any further.

1. Rey is super powerful

Screen Shot 2017-10-09 at 11.38.07 PM

One of the big themes of the trailer was how powerful Rey is.  Some were upset that Rey was able to best Kylo Ren at the end of The Force Awakens, but it seems that we’ll be gaining more understanding as to how that was possible in The Last Jedi, as Rey seems to be quite strong in the force.  Much of this understanding from the trailer is through the eyes/words of Luke Skywalker.  There’s the scene in which the ground cracks (presumably through some of Rey’s doing) and the Jedi Master has a look of surprise, seen in the image above.  Then in another scene, we hear Luke say, “I’ve seen this raw strength only once before.  It didn’t scare me enough then.  It does now.”  When he trained Ben Solo he saw that raw strength, and now he sees it in Rey… but this time, he’s afraid to train her because he saw what happened to Ben.  But if Luke – who thought Ben was the chosen one – says that Rey is the only one to match the raw strength he saw in Ben, it means that Rey is indeed quite powerful.  We heard Kylo in TFA say that Rey was stronger than she knows, and it seems she might be stronger than we know too.  She just needs a teacher…

2.  The reason Luke is hesitant to teach Rey?

Screen Shot 2017-10-09 at 11.39.51 PM

Going along with the previous point, we seem to have gotten more insight into why Luke is hesitant to train Rey.  We’ve known for months that Luke won’t exactly be a welcoming host to Rey and will be resistant and rough, and people had various opinions as to why that would be.  Part of that might very well have to do with his exile and his sense of failure, but the trailer identified a very significant reason too: he’s scared of her power.  That might make some fans of Luke (whose supposed to be the galaxy’s strongest force user) upset, but I think it actually makes sense: this kind of fear is the kind that leads to hesitancy.  In other words, Luke has learned his lesson.  He saw the raw strength in Ben and it didn’t prompt any fear in him, but then Ben betrayed him and destroyed everything… so now that Luke sees that same kind of raw strength in Rey, it makes sense that he’d be quite hesitant to train her.  This could be hinting at one of the main points of tension between Luke and Rey in the movie as he’s hesitant to train her.

3.  Luke was at his Jedi Temple when it was destroyed

Screen Shot 2017-10-09 at 11.39.19 PM

Assuming that this isn’t some sort of misleading shot, this glimpse is more significant than it initially appears: it tells us that Luke was actually at his Jedi Temple when it was destroyed.  Many (including myself) figured that Luke was away and came back to find the Temple destroyed, but it looks here like he was buried under rubble and emerged (we see his mechanical right hand bursting through).  This leads to more questions: was Luke surprised by the attack?  Was Luke a part of it?  Was Luke bested?  There will be speculation as to what exactly happened, but it seems that whatever it was happened with Luke present.

4.  Kylo Ren is on Crait

Screen Shot 2017-10-09 at 11.47.17 PM

As the First Order walkers and TIE Fighters assault the Resistance base on Crait, the trailer showed us that there’s another ship there too: Kylo Ren’s command shuttle.  That places the fallen Jedi at the Battle of Crait, likely taking part in the First Order’s efforts to wipe out the Resistance.  Additionally, another shot in the trailer seemed to show Kylo leading a group of First Order snowtroopers into a cave that looked like it’s probably on Crait too.  We’ve been learning more and more about the battle that takes place on Crait, and while we still don’t know much about it, it seems that most of the main characters will take part, including Kylo Ren, General Leia, Finn, Poe, and Rey.  One person we don’t know about as it pertains to this battle, however?  Luke Skywalker.

5.  The Resistance is in big trouble

Screen Shot 2017-10-09 at 11.46.04 PM

In many ways, the trailer gives the feeling of a darker theme for the movie, which makes sense considering we’ve previously heard that this installment will be darker than the previous one (and rightfully so).  In the trailer, we see plenty of glimpses of that.  At one point, we see the Resistance fleet (no doubt trying to evacuate D’Qar) taking damage and heavy losses, and we see Kylo Ren attacking the Raddus (with Leia on board).  In another shot, we see the Supremacy firing upon some sort of Resistance transport (I wonder if they’re escape pods?) and destroying one.  Then there’s a shot early in the trailer of the walkers marching on Crait that appears to be later in the day and closer to the mountains, perhaps signifying that the odds are in their favor early on.  And there’s the shots of the Resistance base closing its massive door and General Leia standing alone inside watching it happen, which again gives the feeling of a desperate Resistance trying to survive the First Order onslaught.  The Resistance is in trouble, and it’s a time like that where a strong General is needed most – and luckily for them, they’ve got one.

6.  Rey and Snoke interact

Screen Shot 2017-10-09 at 11.47.41 PM

Yes, the trailer gave us our first look at Supreme Leader Snoke in the flesh, but it also revealed that he does in fact interact with Rey, as we see a clip of Snoke using the force to torture Rey while we hear him saying, “Fulfill. Your. Destiny!”  We know that Snoke has telepathic powers, so it’s possible that this scene is a vision that Rey has in which Snoke tries to torment her, but the trailer certainly suggests as more likely that Rey and Snoke actually meet aboard the Supremacy.  This leads to a lot of speculation as to what might happen, but the confirmation we got in the trailer is that the Supreme Leader interacts in some way with Rey in the movie.

7.  Leia and Kylo “interact.”

Screen Shot 2017-10-09 at 11.41.15 PM

Unbeknownst to anyone at the time of filming, this will be the final Star Wars film for the legendary Carrie Fisher, meaning that this will be a farewell performance from Leia Organa.  There are obviously two big relational ties with Leia in these films, as she has a familial relationship with Luke and Kylo.  We don’t know for sure if she reunites with either of them in this film, but the trailer hinted that at least she has some sort of interaction with Kylo, if only through the force.  We see Kylo piloting his TIE Silencer and attacking the Raddus, but as he targets the bridge he senses his mother’s presence, and she senses him.  We see the hesitancy to actually fire, and it’s a safe bet that Kylo doesn’t pull the trigger.  Whether or not that’s the only interaction between the two of them in the film remains to be seen, but at the very least it seems like Leia and Ben will have some sort of connection/interaction in the movie.

8.  The fight between Finn and Phasma.

Screen Shot 2017-10-09 at 11.45.14 PM

It had been strongly hinted at before, but now we’ve got confirmation: Finn and Captain Phasma go head-to-head in The Last Jedi.  We had heard reports that Phasma uses a spear in the movie, and the trailer confirmed that, as we see her fighting Finn with it.  But the real significance (other than the fact that we get to actually see a clip of it and it looks awesome!) is that it gives us more context as to what’s going on.  Finn is in his First Order disguise, which places this confrontation during his undercover mission with Rose to infiltrate the First Order.  Additionally, it looks like the setting is in the same hangar that we saw Kylo Ren overlooking in the first shot of the trailer, and my guess is that it’s in the Supremacy.  A key distinction from this shot, however?  The explosions in the background, which means that perhaps Finn’s mission is a success.

9.  Two key ships at the Battle over D’Qar?

Screen Shot 2017-10-10 at 2.07.21 PM

The difficult thing with this shot (like with the next one) is that there’s nothing definitive that will place it at a specific location, but I think it’s most likely to be the Battle over D’Qar as the Resistance tries to evacuate.  We see Kylo Ren piloting his TIE Silencer in this  battle and attacking the Raddus, which would of course be confirmation that Kylo Ren actually takes part in the attempt to wipe out the Resistance before they can flee their base.  If that scene really is from the evacuation of D’Qar, however, it also places another significant ship there: the Supremacy, the flagship and mobile command center of Supreme Leader Snoke.  If that’s true (and we also see a shot of the Supremacy firing upon Resistance transports), then it highlights how serious the First Order is about wiping the Resistance out before they can escape.

10.  Two more legends on Crait?

Screen Shot 2017-10-09 at 11.42.27 PM

We see a shot of the Millennium Falcon flying through a cave filled with crystals and being pursued by a couple of TIE Fighters, and based on what we know of the planets this seems most likely to be Crait… which, of course, would mean that the Falcon is involved in that battle.  Additionally, it seems that the legendary first mate of the legendary ship is also involved, as the very next scene shows us Chewbacca piloting the ship (and being joined by an adorable Porg).  Because of the Porg, I don’t think it’s 100% certain that this is on Crait, as it could be on Ahch-To, but the indications are nonetheless that Chewie and the Porg are involved in the Battle of Crait too and that the Falcon takes flight during it.  Whether or not Chewie is the sole pilot or if there’s someone else flying with him remains to be seen, though.
