Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord renewed for season two!

The newest Star Wars series has yet to premiere, but a second season has already been greenlit by Lucasfilm.

Lucasfilm President and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni announced today that Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will be continuing with a second season, which is already in the works at Lucasfilm Animation.

No other information was given, but really, no other information is needed at this point. The first season of the show premieres on April 6, with two episodes each week until the finale on May 4. The ten-episode season makes it the shortest of any of the major Lucasfilm Animation shows, which likely further explains the decision to renew it already. It’s a good sign of what Lucasfilm thinks of the series, but also means that they have a plan for how the story continues.

We know that Maul’s story won’t wrap up in Shadow Lord, since it culminates in Rebels, but we also know that somehow Maul becomes the shadowy leader of the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate. There is therefore a lot of space to tell those stories in this era, and I would expect a second season to press even deeper into the crime boss side of Maul’s journey.

But we’ll know more after seeing the first season of the show, and can speculate more responsibly then. Maul – Shadow Lord was created by Dave Filoni, who developed the show alongside Matt Michnovetz. Filoni and Michnovetz serve as executive producers, alongside Athena Yvette Portillo, Brad Rau, Carrie Beck, and Josh Rimes, with Rau serving as the show’s supervising director. Sam Witwer returns to the role of Maul, with newcomers Gideon Adlon (Devon Izara), Wagner Moura (Brander Lawson), Richard Ayoade (Two-Boots), and others part of the cast.
