A brand new Star Wars game, Fate of the Old Republic, has been announced!

The announcement of a new Star Wars game has been rumored for several weeks now, and at the 2025 Game Awards it was revealed: Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is in development!

The excitement with a game like this is in large part thanks to the Old Republic name, and that’s not just a random inclusion. This single-player role-playing game is being developed by Arcanaut Studios, together with Lucasfilm Games. Arcanaut Studios is a new studio helmed by Casey Hudson, who was the director on the original Knights of the Old Republic game and is returning as game director on this title. A StarWars.com interview with Hudson clarifies that this game is not meant to be a direct continuation or sequel of the previous Old Republic games, but Hudson also acknowledges that it will be honoring the legacy and will be made by people who helped bring the previous games to life.

All of that is incredibly exciting, as it represents the first major foray into the Old Republic era in the new Disney canon, and it does so in the most fitting way possible: through a brand new game carrying on the legacy. The description of the game says you will “step into the role of a Force user on a journey through a galaxy on the edge of rebirth at the end of the Old Republic.”

The placement at the end of the Old Republic era is significant, as it will likely allow the game to reference events from previous games (and, if doing so, make them canon again) without being beholden to them (like the shot of a crashed interdictor ship in the trailer, which could be the Leviathon). But it’s also notable because this would almost certainly be around the time of Darth Bane, who warred against the Republic and became the last surviving Sith, thus forming the Rule of Two to ensure the Sith lived on long after the Jedi thought them to be extinct. A canon story set during this time sounds pretty cool.

All of that’s the really exciting stuff. The less exciting reality is that this game is in the very early stages of development, from a studio that was just recently formed, so we’re not going to be playing it anytime soon.
