Filming on Star Wars: Starfighter began at the end of August, and director Shawn Levy today gave us our first glimpse at the set in an image posted to social media.
The picture shows stars Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray on a raft of sorts, seemingly adrift at sea. Levy captioned the post “Somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea”, hinting at the filming location, while tagging Sardinia, Italy in his Instagram post.
It’s really cool to get an image from the set of a new Star Wars movie being filmed, as it drives the excitement and intrigue. Not much is known about the plot of Starfighter, other than that it will be set around five years after The Rise of Skywalker. Though they have left the door open to some familiar characters making an appearance, this is a standalone film telling a whole new story.
Of course, while we don’t know much, you can’t keep Star Wars fans from speculating. The picture features an ocean planet, the movie has reference to ships in its very title, and it is set around the sequel trilogy era – so I can’t help but call to mind the planet Castilon. It was the main setting of the animated Star Wars Resistance series, as an ocean planet housing a station on the water named the Colossus (that wound up being a ship), which was notable for its racing. It’s probably quite unlikely for this movie to be referencing that show in such a notable way, but admittedly it would be really cool if Gosling’s character were a racer familiar with the Colossus.
Filming has just started, so there is much yet to be learned. What we know is that Starfighter will hit theaters on May 28, 2027. Directed and produced by Shawn Levy, with a script by Jonathan Tropper, Starfighter is also produced by Kathleen Kennedy with Ryan Gosling, Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen, and Josh McLaglen executive producing. Joining the aforementioned Gosling and Gray in the cast are Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
