The next chapter of Star Wars has officially begun filming, as Lucasfilm announced that production on Star Wars: Starfighter began on August 28, 2025.
To mark the first day of filming, the official cast list was announced. We already knew that Ryan Gosling is starring as the film’s main character, making him one of the most well-known and established actors to ever be cast in a Star Wars project. Joining Gosling in the cast are Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. It seems like a spectacular cast, including a few names that many fans are likely to recognize.
Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy, is a standalone film set approximately five years after the conclusion of the sequel trilogy. Beyond that, we don’t really know anything about the movie. But we can make a few assumptions, based on the name, that the movie might focus in on a pilot (or want-to-be pilot), taking to the stars in the galaxy far, far away. Furthermore, the fact that Flynn Gray is listed second on the cast list is noteworthy, suggesting that the film will have a child lead opposite of Gosling.
What we do know is it will hit theaters on May 28, 2027, just days after the fiftieth anniversary of the franchise. This is part of Star Wars’s return to the big screen, which will start next year with The Mandalorian & Grogu and continue with Starfighter the following year, to be followed other movies in various stages of development.
Levy is directing and producing the film, with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy also producing. Ryan Gosling, Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen, and Josh McLaglen are executive producers, with a script by Jonathan Tropper.
