In a surprise announcement a few weeks in advance of Star Wars Celebration, it has been revealed that a new mixed reality Star Wars experience will be coming soon. Star Wars: Beyond Victory – A Mixed Reality Playset is in development from Industrial Light & Magic and Lucasfilm, which will be exclusively available for Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets.
The actual game is a podracing adventure, where you get to follow a new character, Volo Bolus, and team up with Sebulba, the podracing champion seen in The Phantom Menace going up against Anakin Skywalker. Sebulba was one of the best in the business, and this experience will be set many years after the events of that film, as it will take place around the time of Solo: A Star Wars Story. The game’s announcement promises “an electrifying story and a variety of unique modes for players to enjoy”.
We still don’t know much about it, but the announcement shared that those in attendance at Star Wars Celebration Japan in a few weeks will get a chance to experience some quests and demos. So I’m guessing we’ll learn much more then. A prequel comic for the story, written by Ethan Sacks, will also be available as a giveaway for fans at the convention.
Of course, for those not in Japan, the way to experience this will be only through Meta Quest headsets, which means it won’t be available to most fans. But I’m sure details about the story will emerge, so we’ll at least be able to keep up with what Sebulba is up to during this period of the timeline. We already know that he continued podracing through the Clone Wars but, at some point after the war, decided to pick up battle racing – something he continued through the events of the original trilogy. It will be interesting to see what a new story about him in this era has to explore.
