Andor will, finally, be telling the story of how Cassian Andor met K-2SO, his lovable and trusty droid sidekick. We’ve known since some of the earliest days of the show’s announcement that this was coming, but showrunner Tony Gilroy made the decision not to include it in season one and instead push it to season two.
He’s aware that it means there’s even more pressure on him to deliver on the story now.
Speaking with Collider, Gilroy admitted that pretty much everybody wanted him to include it in season one but he chose otherwise, and that he knows this is an important moment for Cassian in his journey.
“Yeah, man, the bar is high. No, I knew it. Just by delaying it off the first season, the controversy of that. Nobody was happy about that. I don’t think Disney was happy about that, I don’t think the fans were happy about that. But there was a reason for it, a really, really good reason for it. But it does mean that I definitely have to deliver on the meet-cute, so we’ll see how it goes. We’re happy with what we have.”
The story of Cassian and K2 first meeting has, actually, already been told, in a one-shot comic issue released around the time of Rogue One. In that telling, K2 was an Imperial security droid who imprisoned Cassian, but the rebel agent fought back and (eventually) wound up reprogramming K2 into an ally. I’m expecting that Andor will take plenty of liberties with that and tell a mostly fresh version of it, though I imagine that there will be some elements of it that overlap.
Regardless, what is most important is that this first meeting lands emotionally, and that viewers are able to connect with it and that they are satisfied with the development of this beloved friendship. By the time of Rogue One they are wonderful partners, sent together on top-secret missions, and ultimately both giving their lives for the rebellion during the Battle of Scarif. It will be tremendous to have Alan Tudyk back as K2, and it will be wonderful to see his meeting Cassian.
