A second season of Light & Magic is releasing on Disney+ on April 18!

A second season of the Light & Magic docu-series is coming to Disney+ soon, Collider recently revealed. Three new episodes will be releasing on April 18, directed by Joe Johnston.

The series explores the history of Industrial Light & Magic, the visual effects company created by George Lucas for Star Wars that is continually among the best of the best in the industry, continually pioneering significant advances in the field. The first season of the documentary was fantastic, and it heavily explored the creation of the company and their innovative work on the Star Wars franchise – and the struggle it was to develop the technology for it that didn’t exist. The series continued to tell of their history through Jurassic Park, a landmark achievement in the world of visual effects.

Johnston told Collider that the second season will pick up there, right after Jurassic Park, but will jump around. He did mention that the Star Wars prequel trilogy will be a big part of it, as well as the work ILM did on movies like Twister, Pirates of the Caribbean, Casper, and War of the Worlds. That’s great, especially considering the work on the prequels and Pirates of the Caribbean are also considered to be pioneering in the visual effects industry, much like the work on the original trilogy and Jurassic Park.

Johnston is taking over as director from Lawrence Kasdan, who directed the six-episode first season. Johnston is no stranger to ILM, having worked for them for many years. Since then, he has become a successful director, working on movies such as Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Jumanji, Jurassic Park III, and Captain America: The First Avenger, among others.

The fact that a second season of this series is coming so soon is certainly a surprise, but a most welcome one! The first season was fantastic, and it was exactly what you’d hope for from a documentary series. I can’t wait to see these next three episodes!
