Sigourney Weaver says Grogu is “capable of much more than maybe we think” in The Mandalorian & Grogu

When Star Wars returns to the big screen after a several year-hiatus, it will be two of the franchise’s biggest stars headlining the new movie, with the Mandalorian (Din Djarin) and Grogu returning for their latest adventure in the aptly-titled (if not a bit on-the-nose) The Mandalorian & Grogu.

The film, directed by The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau, will serve as the continuation of the series that began on Disney+. The story of Mando and Grogu has been told in three seasons of The Mandalorian, plus a season of The Book of Boba Fett, making them some of the most well-developed and beloved characters of this streaming era. In that time we’ve seen Grogu go from a child targeted by bounty hunters and the Empire to a Jedi-in-training studying with Luke Skywalker to a Mandalorian foundling. But it seems there’s still plenty more to discover.

At least that’s what Sigourney Weaver said recently, who is making her Star Wars debut in the movie. She recently spoke with Games Radar about it, sharing that Grogu is the reason why she accepted the role and teasing what to expect from the lovable alien. “I get to have scenes with a little Grogu which is probably why I did the movie,” she said. “And he’s a little badass too. It’s going to be wonderful for people to see what Grogu is up to now because he’s grown up a little bit and is capable of much more than maybe we think just watching the series.”

Upon reading that a number of fans began speculating that this could mean we’ll actually hear Grogu speak for the first time, and while it seems probable that we’ll hear him talk at some point, I don’t think that’s what this has to mean. He’s been trained in the ways of the Force by Luke and is being trained as a Mandalorian by Din, and we’ve continued to see his prowess in these areas grow. So I think it’s most likely that we’ll see his further developed skills in using the Force, and probably even some things he’s picked up from the Mandalorians as well. I’ve thought for a while that the showrunners could be working toward Grogu as a type of Mandalorian Jedi in the legacy of Tarre Vizsla, slowly but surely learning and growing into it. So it seems likely we’ll see him show off some new skills in this movie. Weaver’s tease is intriguing, but also stating what we all should have already expected.

The Mandalorian & Grogu will hit theaters on May 22, 2026, making it the first Star Wars film on the big screen since The Rise of Skywalker came out at the end of 2019. We’ll probably learn quite a bit more about the film at Star Wars Celebration in April.
