A new Star Wars comic is finally going to begin telling the story of what Luke, Leia, and Han were up to after Return of the Jedi

At long last, we’re going to be getting a story that focuses on the main heroes of the original trilogy in the period immediately following the Galactic Civil War.

Star Wars recently announced that the main Star Wars comic line, re-launching in 2025, will jump into the post-Return of the Jedi era, with the previous runs having taken place post-A New Hope and post-The Empire Strikes Back, respectively. Written by Alex Segura with art from Phil Noto, the series picks up after the Battle of Jakku formally ended the Civil War a year after the Battle of Endor. It will focus on Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, and other familiar characters as they adjust to a new galaxy with new responsibilities and new threats. From the sound of it, there are separatist planets resistant to New Republic rule, as well as pirates and thieves looking to take advantage of the fact that the Empire is no longer there to enforce things.

“Now that we’ve put the period at the end of the Galactic Civil War with the Battle of Jakku, we can speed ahead into a new, uncharted era, with some new galactic threats, foes, and mysteries for our beloved heroes to grapple with, blending the familiar with the new and shocking,” Segura told StarWars.com. “These stories will be packed with action and the character moments Star Wars fans have come to expect, featuring twists on the galaxy and landscape we know, with an eye toward making sure people can jump in easily and with any issue. We can’t wait.”

Though stories about these original three beloved heroes have been plenty over the past decade, it’s actually pretty surprising how scarce they have been in this time period. We’ve heard a few pieces here and there, but nothing overly substantial that has begun to fill in the details. It’s been something that I’ve been wanting for a long time, and though I would have preferred it to come by way of an animated series, or even coming from a more trusted writer like Charles Soule, but I’ll take it any way we can get it. I’m really excited to dive in to this story, albeit a bit wary given Segura’s recent Battle of Jakku series that was complicated and convoluted. It was a far cry from the kind of home run story that it had the potential to be, but since one of the big issues with it was that it played loose with other canon stories, I’m hopeful that as Segura now ventures to a period canon stories have hardly touched that won’t be as big of an issue. This series has the potential to be a huge hit with Star Wars fans and a major addition to the Star Wars canon, and I’m hopeful it delivers.
