An upcoming Star Wars comic will finally show us the fate of one of the prequel trilogy’s most despicable characters.
Marvel Star Wars editor Mark Paniccia posted a few images of the second issue of the upcoming Legacy of Vader comic, showing Kylo Ren traveling to Tatooine as he hunts the legacy of his grandfather. While there, he has a vision, it seems, of Darth Vader force choking Watto, lightsaber ignited, taking his revenge.
Watto, of course, first appeared in The Phantom Menace as the Toydarian junk trader who owned Shmi and Anakin Skywalker as his slaves. Ever the opportunist and ever the gambler, Watto made a deal with Qui-Gon Jinn that resulted in the boy’s freedom, but not his mother’s. A decade later, in Attack of the Clones, we learn that Watto sold Shmi to help pay off some of his gambling debts. Though Watto sold Shmi to a good family, she was later kidnapped and killed by Tusken Raiders. Watto isn’t the pure evil villain that some other Star Wars characters are, but he’s still driven by his own lust for money and is willing to enslave people to get it.
It appears that, sometime prior to Return of the Jedi, Vader hunted down Watto and killed him as an act of revenge, which seems quite fitting for the character. It’s especially fitting in light of some of the recent Darth Vader comics that show Vader dealing with the legacy of his past, as this story would fit well sometime in that time period.
Legacy of Vader is a highly-anticipated series written by Star Wars veteran Charles Soule, telling of Kylo Ren’s quest to learn more about the legacy of his grandfather. The first issue hits stores on February 5, 2025.
