The Rey movie has found its new writer.
The Hollywood Reporter reported today that George Nolfi has been hired to write New Jedi Order, a film that the article states is set 15 years after the sequel trilogy and stars Daisy Ridley as Rey training a new generation of Jedi. Though the article states New Jedi Order like it’s the film’s title, no movie title has been officially announced, and given that they’re still in the writing process, this is probably at most a working title (although it’s a good one). Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who directed two episodes of Ms. Marvel, is set to direct.
Nolfi is best-known for his work writing Ocean’s Twelve (2004) and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), and since has written and/or directed several films.
Since this movie was announced at Star Wars Celebration in 2023, it’s been believed that the movie is due to go into production soon, but changes to the writing staff keep pushing that back to where it’s now seeming unlikely the Rey film will be the next Star Wars film to hit the box office after The Mandalorian & Grogu. Initially, Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were working on writing the movie, which THR notes was before Obaid-Chinoy was attached to direct. But by the time the film was announced, Steven Knight was the writer, but a few months ago it was revealed he was no longer doing so. Now, enter
Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, Lost) and Justin Britt-Gibson were the initial writers on the project, working on it before Obaid-Chinoy was brought on. By the time Ridley was revealed as returning in April 2023, Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight was clacking away at the keyboard. But by October 2024, he was no longer on the project. Now enters Nolfi, who is tasked with getting the script right for one of Star Wars’s most anticipated movies in development. A few months ago, THR reported that Lucasfilm is currently developing several films that star Rey, although the situation is obviously fluid and it’s not clear exactly which movies.
