Skeleton Crew has just recently debuted on Disney+, but its showrunners already have thoughts about a potential second season.
Speaking with Collider, showrunners Jon Watts and Chris Ford confirmed that they have an idea of more stories they could tell with the main cast of characters – which, of course, is made up of four children. Given that, a second season could potentially be more difficult since the actors would be growing older, but the showrunners have that one covered too.
“We 100% have an idea for a second season and know what we would do,” Watts said. He then added, “We have a built-in ticking clock of the kids and their age, and by the time we would get production going, we know what age they would be. So, we would be writing towards that. You’ll be growing up with the kids. … It would be something like [a three to four-year time jump] to make sense. We haven’t seen the kids in a while, so it just depends on how tall the kids are. But we wouldn’t do like a Stranger Things thing where we’re like ‘It’s the next day,’ because it won’t be.”
That’s a well-thought-out plan, but it also presents a challenge in continuing this story. A multi-year time jump can happen (just look at the original Star Wars trilogy), but when it comes to shows it becomes a more nuanced discussion that has to keep continuity and have a compelling reason for why the kids are thrust into another adventure when they are.
But all of that is getting ahead of ourselves, since a second season hasn’t even been announced. I do think it’s noteworthy, though, that the showrunners have thought about it as much as they have. Interestingly, earlier this summer it was reported that while the show was developed as a one-off, Lucasfilm was considering doing another season if the first one was well-received. Well, the start to the show has been very well-received, and the fact that the creatives behind it are already discussing another season like this suggests that perhaps it could be more than just an idea.
