Speaking at the premiere for Skeleton Crew, Dave Filoni confirmed to Extra TV that he is currently writing the second season of Ahsoka.
Filoni, Lucasfilm’s Chief Creative Officer and creator of The Clone Wars, Rebels, Ahsoka, and more, shared that he is the sole writer on the series and is finding it challenging, but exciting. He has been a busy man, working on so many different projects for the company including recently executive producing Skeleton Crew and The Mandalorian & Grogu (which will release in theaters in 2026), but Ahsoka represents even more direct involvement from him.
Filoni serves as showrunner, executive producer, director, and writer, and he revealed that he’s the sole writer on the second season. That was also the case on the show’s first season, so it’s not a huge surprise, but it’s still notable. He’s a brilliant creative mind with a remarkable grasp of the Star Wars universe and themes, but a writer’s room is also rarely a bad idea – especially if he’s finding it challenging to write the second season. So hopefully this is actually a good thing, but since I enjoyed the first season of the show and enjoy Filoni’s storytelling I’m confident it will all turn out.
On a related note, IndieWire is reporting that Ahsoka will begin filming in April 2025 – but that, notably, it will move production to the United Kingdom. Star Wars has a long history of filming in the UK, but in recent years a lot of their shows have been filmed in Los Angeles using The Volume technology – including season one of Ahsoka. The move to the UK means that Filoni will be utilizing more techniques to film it than that, which could be a really significant development. The Volume is a fantastic and revolutionary filmmaking technique but cannot account for everything, and if Ahsoka is able to branch out and film in some broader ways that will be a very good thing.
It’s still crazy that it will have been a year and a half after the release of the first season before the second season even begins filming, but such is the current state of the streaming business. Those gripes aside, it’s nice to know that things will begin ramping up soon for the highly-anticipated second season.
