We recently got our first look at Director Orson Krennic in Andor through Empire Magazine’s preview issue, and in the full feature article we got more details about his role.
The article reveals that Krennic is “in charge of raising money to build the Death Star, but he’s behind schedule and over budget. And we know from the Original Trilogy how his bosses feel about delays.”
Krennic, played by Ben Mendelsohn, first appeared in Rogue One as the Imperial officer overseeing the Death Star project. Working for the Imperial Security Bureau division, Krennic runs the advanced weapons division. Even in that movie, he’s seen desperate to finally get the superlaser fixed. That, after all, is what took so long; the space station itself didn’t take too long to build, but the weapon took years to figure out. Years that, of course, mean more money and more delays. Grand Moff Tarkin alludes to this in Rogue One when he mentions so many setbacks and delays.
So in Andor, Krennic will be working to raise more support for the top-secret project, and what that means is surely more internal politicking and feuding behind the scenes. It will bring him into conflict with Dedra Meero, and we know who will win that power struggle.
I think it’s great that we’re getting Krennic back in Star Wars in this format, and I have full confidence that Andor will deliver above and beyond what we could expect from a series that highlights fundraising and internal political drama.
