One of the many highlights of Rogue One was Ben Mendelsohn as Director Orson Krennic, the Imperial officer overseeing the top-secret Death Star project. Mendelsohn is returning to the role for Andor season two, which is coming to Disney+ next spring, and we recently got our first official look at him.
As part of Empire Magazine’s 2025 preview, Andor was highlighted – Krennic included. The magazine included a picture of him in his white uniform and cloak, and also ran an article with a few hints about what to expect from his role. Most notably, we learned that Krennic will come up against Dedra Meero in a bit of power struggle, and since we know what happens in Rogue One, that means it’s a struggle Meero won’t win.
“If they didn’t see eye to eye, to me, it’s cute,” Mendelsohn said in the Empire feature. “Dedra versus Krennic? I think it’s a bit of a mismatch. They’re all underlings to Krennic.”
Officially, Krennic was the director of the Imperial Military Development of Advanced Weapons Research, which explains his role overseeing the Death Star, since the main hangup for years was the super-laser weapon. But in more general terms, Krennic’s role placed him within the Imperial Security Bureau, which explains the white uniform. The ISB is also the division seen heavily in Andor, for which Meero works. So we’re probably going to see even more of the internal power struggle within the ISB in season two, and to have a major player like Krennic become involved will be really cool to see.
As for who else might show up, we don’t know yet. Empire asked Mendelsohn about whether Grand Moff Tarkin could make an appearance, since he’s seen working “with” Krennic in Rogue One, but Mendelsohn played coy. “You know I can’t answer that,” he said. “And I delight in not being able to answer your question. It’s a beautiful thing.” Which, though it doesn’t tell us anything, is actually a brilliant answer to a question he can’t comment on. I’m impressed.
Most of all, though, I’m just looking forward to seeing Orson Krennic on-screen again in Andor. The second and final season will premiere on April 22, 2025 on Disney+.
