Rey is reportedly going to feature in several Star Wars movies currently being developed

At Star Wars Celebration 2023, Lucasfilm unveiled plans for several upcoming Star Wars movies, including James Mangold’s film about the dawn of the Jedi and Dave Filoni’s film wrapping up The Mandalorian story. They then surprised the audience by announcing the star of a third film in development: Daisy Ridley would be returning as Rey for a still untitled project, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

From the sound of it, the return of Rey is only beginning.

Earlier this week, The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit ran a feature story about the uncertain future (and messy present) that is the realm of Star Wars movies. The piece really centered around Rey’s crucial role in the future of the franchise. Kit quoted one source as saying, “She is the most valuable cinematic asset, in some ways maybe the only one, Star Wars has right now.” The article then mentioned this:

“According to sources, Rey is set to play a role in several movies that are being developed, although which ones remains unclear.”

Keep in mind that all of this comes on the heels of the report that Simon Kinberg is developing a trilogy of Star Wars movies, with some reports – though quite contested by others – suggesting it is possibly a continuation of the episodic Skywalker saga. If that were to prove true, then Rey would almost certainly be involved. But from the sounds of it, we’ll be seeing Rey involved in a number of projects in the future, whether we get an ‘official’ episode ten or not.

While one of the points of the article was to highlight how Lucasfilm doesn’t have a ton of options for how to move forward with beloved characters, it nonetheless is great news to hear that Daisy Ridley’s return to the franchise might be a far more expansive and invested thing than we initially thought. She’s been quite excited about returning as Rey, and even recently shared that we should be hearing news soon after Obaid-Chinoy’s film changed writers. Depending on where that script is at, the movie should be in a position to begin filming sometime soon, and perhaps it will be the first chapter of a new era of on-screen storytelling. Thinking about Rey’s return in such a big way like this gets me really excited to see what could be in store in the coming years.
