New Star Wars comic will explore Kylo Ren’s complicated family legacy in-between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker

The Star Wars comics are finally beginning to cover the time period following Return of the Jedi, but they’ll soon jump a few decades further in the timeline to begin filling in some more gaps in the sequel trilogy storyline. Veteran Star Wars author Charles Soule is writing a new comic series called Star Wars: Legacy of Vader, which follows Kylo Ren in-between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.

The ongoing comic will pick up with Kylo visiting Vader’s castle on Mustafar, and in later issues will see him travel to Tatooine to his family’s roots. This series will also be our first journey into Kylo’s time as the Supreme Leader of the First Order at this period, as there is a one-year gap between the films.

Of course, there’s a lot of material for Soule to work with, given that right before this series starts Kylo had killed his father, almost killed his mother, killed his mentor, and then faced his former Jedi Master and uncle – not to mention met a young woman he was quite enthralled with. That’s a lot of change to happen over the course of days, and that means there’s a lot for Kylo to have to wrestle with and work through as he deals with the complicated legacy of his family and his unstable commitment to darkness. Soule is the perfect choice to write this series, having previously written a terrific Darth Vader series (Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith) and a pivotal four-issue mini-series about Kylo’s fall to the dark side (The Rise of Kylo Ren).

I’m thrilled that the comics are beginning to explore the sequel trilogy timeline more in-depth, which will coincide with the tenth anniversary of The Force Awakens in 2025. With the Battle of Jakku comics beginning to jump into the post-ROTJ world we’re inching toward it, but this Kylo Ren comic will place us squarely within the timeline with a really significant story exploring one of the main figures from the era. Furthermore, at New York Comic Con it was announced that Ethan Sacks is writing a new Poe Dameron comic that is set prior to TFA, so it seems the journey into the sequel era is just beginning. It’s overdue, and I can’t wait for this series! I’ll be eagerly following along with each issue.
