Ewan McGregor says he’s “exploring” ideas for another season of Obi-Wan Kenobi with Lucasfilm

Ewan McGregor has been very open about desiring a return to the Star Wars franchise and continuing the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and while nothing appears imminent, it does sound like conversations are ongoing.

McGregor was at LA Comic Con recently and said that they are “exploring” ideas for a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi, adding that what he really wants is to wear the Clone Wars armor and film more flashbacks with Hayden Christensen.

That’s still a long ways from it actually being seriously considered, and there has yet to be any hint that a second season is actually in the works. But this is nonetheless welcome news, and this seems like a step in the right direction if McGregor and Lucasfilm are in discussions about what a second season could be like.

This is absolutely the right thing for Lucasfilm to be doing, whether or not another season winds up happening. When you have such a terrific, established, and beloved actor like Ewan McGregor openly pushing to play one of the most iconic characters in Star Wars history again, how can you not at least explore what stories that could happen in? The real determining factor, of course, will come down to whether they believe there’s a story worth telling.

Especially given McGregor’s interest in wearing the Clone Wars armor and filming flashbacks, however, it seems there would be ample story potential to follow. A second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi could have far lower stakes on the galactic scale, with the embattled Jedi remaining on Tatooine, but in doing so they could further explore his ‘watching over’ Luke, training with Qui-Gon Jinn, and even reuniting with Cody (as was originally talked about for the Obi-Wan Kenobi story), plus there are always random skirmishes to get into on a planet like Tatooine. But significantly, the series could make extensive use of flashbacks; McGregor and Christensen would be open to returning, and they cast Ariana Greenblatt as a young Ahsoka Tano for the Ahsoka series, too. There have been other prequel actors vocal about a desire to return as well, and this could be an avenue to explore all of that. I’m not sure there will be anything ever made again that some Star Wars fans don’t hate, but a series with so many of the prequel favorites reuniting for Clone Wars flashbacks for a second season of this series seems like it has tons of potential.

But that’s all just speculation on my part. There’s nothing remotely concrete developing, and there’s a good chance there never will be. But it’s great to hear that Lucasfilm is at least open to exploring further stories with Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan, and I’m hoping they find a way to do it.
