With The Acolyte wrapping up this summer, Lucasfilm is turning its attention toward the next live-action show from the galaxy far, far away: Skeleton Crew, which today received an official premiere date of December 3, 2024.
The announcement came in a People article published today, which also included some of our very first images from the series. The description for the show, given by Lucasfilm, reads: “When four kids make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, they get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Finding their way home, meeting unlikely allies and enemies will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.”
The series stars Jude Law as Jod Na Nawood, who is joined by a group of children starring in the series: Ravi Cabot-Conyers as Wim, Kryiana Kratter as KB, Robert Timothy Smith as Neel, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Fern. Law told People that the series will see these kids in places they shouldn’t be and that “seeing children in that environment in a Star Wars environment is thrilling and very, very unique.”
Asked to describe the show, Law said that the first word that comes to his mind is “joyful”. It sounds like this is going to be a more lighthearted adventure with a younger main cast than other shows have been, which I think is pretty cool. I think it’s great that in the same year we can get a show like The Acolyte and another like Skeleton Crew, which probably will be quite different tonally yet both within this great galaxy.
Law, as well as showrunners Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, teased plenty of Easter Eggs throughout the series, but there will likely be even stronger connective tissue than those nods to other material in the franchise. Skeleton Crew is set roughly in the same era as The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett, making it part of an ever-growing collection of live-action stories set in the early days of the New Republic, several years post-Return of the Jedi. Just how much overlap there will be remains to be seen, but so far all of the stories have been quite well-connected. Furthermore, Kathleen Kennedy, Jon Favreau, and Dave Filoni all join Watts and Ford as Executive Producers on the series, strengthening the ties to The Mandalorian stories.
The series will premiere on Disney+, and the date suggests that Disney is keeping the Tuesday evening releases used for Ahsoka and The Acolyte, to great success. We’ll likely hear much more about Skeleton Crew at D23 in just a few weeks.
