Jacen Syndulla’s costume in Ahsoka includes a cool nod to his father, Kanan Jarrus

In the third episode of Ahsoka, we see Jacen Syndulla make an appearance for the first time in live-action.

He had just one brief scene there, but he had more time in the fourth episode and then had a very significant role in the fifth one. He sensed through the Force that Ahsoka was out there, leading to her rescue. Jacen’s connection to the Force is evident, and Huyang explained to Carson Teva that Jacen’s father, Kanan Jarrus, was a Jedi. Jacen even told Hera in his first on-screen scene that he wants to be a Jedi, and it’s not hard to see why, considering how great of a Jedi his dad was.

But beyond desiring to be a Jedi just like his father before him, there’s a subtle nod to Kanan in Jacen’s outfit that is really cool. He wears a pauldron on his right shoulder that looks incredibly similar to the one his dad wore, same symbol and all.

Kanan wore one that was a very similar shade of green on his right shoulder too. So it would seem that Jacen is wearing it as a way to remember the father he never met. Yeah, that’s going to make us emotional. There’s another interesting similarity at play too, though I’m less sure whether it’s directly intentional or not, but Jacen’s hair here looks a lot like the same hairstyle Ezra Bridger (Kanan’s apprentice) wore during the first two seasons of Rebels. Jacen’s hair is green and Ezra’s blue, but the style is much the same.

It might be purposeful or it might be coincidental, but I like the fact that there’s so much of the Ghost crew in Jacen, and that the two members of the crew that he (presumably) has never gotten to meet are the two he’s honoring with his look. And they’re the ones he aspires to be like, as he wants to be a Jedi.
