When the second trailer for Ahsoka released, there was a surprising moment where Sabine Wren referred to Ahsoka Tano as “master”. Without disclosing much information about this, the marketing since then has played up the potential master and apprentice nature of their relationship.
That continued with a new TV spot, called “Trick”, in which we see Ahsoka training Sabine in lightsaber combat. We see some new shots of Sabine and Shin Hati fighting in the forest (and in the background we can see Ahsoka fighting Marrok, which confirms these duels happen simultaneously), but then see Ahsoka and Sabine dueling with sticks while Huyang watches. Sabine falls to the ground, but Ahsoka says, “let’s go again.”
The brief moment is a fun callback to one of the best episodes of Rebels, where Sabine learned lightsaber combat from Kanan Jarrus as they dueled with sticks before moving to actual lightsabers. I’m all for seeing training like this, and it further emphasizes how Ahsoka will take on the role of master in this series as she trains Sabine. The big question that remains unanswered is whether Sabine can wield the Force or not; we already knew she is quite proficient in lightsaber combat, but what about in the Force? The short answer is we don’t know yet. However, at risk of making too big of a deal out of this, I find it interesting that Sabine wears a visor down over her eyes in the training, only lifting it after she falls to the ground. Fans of the franchise might remember how Luke wore a helmet with a visor down in A New Hope, and this could (though let’s make it clear that this is nothing definitive) indicate that Sabine might be Force-sensitive.
The biggest connection point here is to her training in Rebels, though, and also to Ahsoka’s training with Anakin. To get the chance to see Ahsoka training Sabine in the upcoming series will be a real delight.
