The Mandalorian started out as the first live-action Star Wars series, but it’s grown into something more, becoming the flagship of a show of an inter-connected mini-universe within the much larger Star Wars canon universe.
In addition to three seasons of The Mandalorian, we have had a season of The Book of Boba Fett and the upcoming shows Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew, plus an eventual theatrical film directed by Dave Filoni. One of the big connective tissues between these shows are executive producers Filoni and Jon Favreau, but beyond that we don’t know a ton about how (or how much) they’re going to all tie together.
We recently got a clue about Ahsoka, though, from star Natasha Liu Bordizzo, who is bringing Sabine Wren to live-action. Speaking with SFX Magazine (h/t to Gizmodo), Bordizzo hinted about Sabine’s relationship with Ahsoka, one she said involves respect and tension – “there’s things they’ve been through that they need to work out.” But she also spoke to what it’s like joining this Mandalorian universe, and she said she’s not sure if Sabine will make further appearances (my bet’s on yes) but that it feels like she’s “part of something bigger.”
Most interesting to me, though, is how she continued by saying that, “Ahsoka runs along the same timeline as The Mandalorian season 3, and the shows are all connected. There’s just so many parallels.”
This makes a lot of sense and is frankly what I think many of us expected, but it’s always good to see it stated like this. But I do wonder if we’ll see Ahsoka start simultaneously with The Mandalorian before then branching out beyond it, because in the latter series the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn was imminent, but had not yet happened. That event will take place in Ahsoka. So it seems that while Din Djarin and Bo-Katan Kryze are fighting to liberate their homeworld of Mandalore, Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren are on the scent of Thrawn as they’re looking for Ezra Bridger. This will all lead to the roads converging as Thrawn returns to assume the role of the main villain of this Mandoverse.
So yes, these stories are all very connected, indeed!
