Star Wars: The High Republic makes it official: Burryaga LIVES

When the first phase of massive Star Wars: The High Republic publishing initiative wrapped up, the Republic had been dealt a devastating blow as the Starlight Beacon space station was destroyed by the Nihil, a group of hyperspace-traveling raiders. The destruction of Starlight led to plenty of tragedy, but also plenty of heroism as the Jedi rose to save life.

One of the Jedi on the station during these events was the Wookiee padawan Burryaga, a lovable Jedi in-touch with the Force and others. In the aftermath of Starlight’s destruction Burryaga was missing and presumed to be dead – but now, in advance of Phase 3, Star Wars has confirmed that he lives.

On The High Republic show recently, it was announced that Burryaga lives and that his story will continue in the upcoming book Tales of Light and Life, an anthology collection of short stories following characters from this era of storytelling.

The book features chapters by Zoraida Córdova, Tessa Gratton, Claudia Gray, Justina Ireland, Lydia Kang, George Mann, Daniel José Older, Cavan Scott, and Charles Soule. It will be released at San Diego Comic Con this month in advance of a public release on September 5 – which comes a few months before the official start of Phase 3, which kicks off with George Mann’s novel The Eye of Darkness (releasing November 14).

The High Republic is set around 200 years prior to the events of the prequel trilogy, but for it’s second phase it jumped back in time to explore some additional context. That had the effect of furthering the intrigue, but also leaving fans waiting – and wondering – what happened to characters like Burryaga. Those answers will begin to be revealed as the third and final (planned) phase of this era kicks off later this year. But for now, we know that Burryaga lives, and that’s wonderful.
