It’s possible that The Mandalorian season three may not begin filming for a while

We’ve long known that the next chapter of The Mandalorian story will be coming in December 2021, but it won’t be the third season of The Mandalorian – instead, it will be the crossover series The Book of Boba Fett.

That show just recently wrapped production after apparently shooting for around six months, and back in December showrunner Jon Favreau made it seem like The Mandalorian season three would be going into production very shortly after filming wrapped on Boba Fett. But it’s possible it’ll be a longer wait than we thought.

Collider today ran an article about the timeline for when the next season of The Mandalorian will be filming, and reported that the show will begin filming late this year or early next year, which would put season three premiering in late 2022.

This report is unconfirmed, so take it with a grain of salt. But Collider reports that the reason for the delay is that the filming stages in Los Angeles are currently being used by filming for Obi-Wan Kenobi, and added that it’s likely Pedro Pascal’s commitment to filming The Last of Us adds to the complicated scheduling as well. But Collider also said that they’ve heard The Book of Boba Fett described as “The Mandalorian season 2.5″ because characters from Mando will be showing up in Boba Fett as well.

We’ll see whether this turns out to be true. I’d honestly be pretty surprised if season three of Mando doesn’t begin filming until late this year or early next year, but I suppose it’s possible. One thing this does raise, however, is that if the reason for filming getting pushed back is because Kenobi is using the filming stages, it’ll be very interesting in the coming years with more and more live-action shows filming. It means that Lucasfilm may be continually going up against this issue, if that really is the case.

But at the same time, I do like the fall/winter release for The Mandalorian and think it’s worked well the past two years, so if we get a fall/winter release in 2022 rather than a spring release I don’t think that’s a major deal – especially since we’ll be getting The Book of Boba Fett this year, already have The Bad Batch, and have Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor both in production already. There’s tons of great Star Wars content coming, so if we have to wait a bit longer for Mando, that’s ok.

And it’d be even more ok if Cobb Vanth shows up in The Book of Boba Fett. That’s what I’m hoping for, if the show will feature characters from The Mandalorian, as Collider reports.

  1. I don’t mind waiting. As you mentioned, there are several other Star Wars shows already in the works. I would much rather that Lucasfilm wait until those are well along before starting on The Mandalorian season three than rushing it into production. As we saw with Disney initially attempting to release a new Star Wars movie every single year, you can’t just crank these things out without it impacting on the quality.
